Teaching New Learners - 15 credit certificate
Anticipated Start Date: January or September,
2011
In five courses completed during a calendar year, participants will develop materials and teaching practices of immediate use to their classrooms. Participating instructors will collaborate in teams to discuss course content, develop projects, and provide support to each other. Each course embeds the use of technology in teaching, and each course's content and methods will align with the principles of Universal Design for Learning. Regardless of their location, participating community college faculty will be able to participate in asynchronous and synchronous classroom activities. Instruction will be delivered through the Internet (using the Angel course management system), videoconferencing (K-20 network), Web conferencing (via Elluminate), wikis, blogs, and other networking communications tools. By using communications technologies, this project will reduce the isolation that faculty face while allowing them flexibility in when and how they collaborate with a network of peers.
Participants will participate through either individual desktop computers or in ITV classrooms. This will offer faculty around the state the benefit of Seattle University’s adult education and training program without having to leave their location. By modeling the use of instructional technologies, Teaching for New Learners also provides participants with experience using technologies that can they adapt to their own teaching. Participating community college instructors will use interactive tools, such as online forums, blogs, wikis, and chat rooms to communicate with course instructors and collaborate with each other. They will also have the opportunity to work on projects independently and with peers from other colleges. This training will be available to all part-time and full-time community college instructors in Washington State. Participants will receive 15 quarter credits from Seattle University upon completion of the certificate.
